Where It All Began
Valley Glass has roots dating back to 1937 when William T. Naylor and his friend, Glen Burke, were both sales representatives for auto-related businesses. They saw an opportunity to start a distributor company, referred to as a Jobber company at the time, and went into business together as Intermountain Jobbers.
For 18 years, Intermountain Jobbers sold auto supplies, including glass, batteries, and tire chains. In the 1950s, the auto glass industry shifted dramatically as windshields began being manufactured with shapes and curvatures specific to each vehicle. They chose to embrace the curved glass trend and began stocking windshield inventory.
Around the same time, Naylor’s sons, Kenneth and Gerald, returned home from the Korean War and wanted to pursue the family business. In 1956, the first dedicated glass shop was opened in Ogden, UT, under the name Northern Utah Glass. Four years later, they acquired Valley Glass in Boise, Idaho. Shortly after, they founded Central Glass in Salt Lake City, UT, and purchased Davis County Glass in Layton, UT.
Becoming Valley Glass
In 1983, following William T. Naylor’s passing, Kenneth and Gerald decided to split the business. Kenneth took the Central Glass and Intermountain Jobbers locations in the Salt Lake Valley, while Gerald took the northern businesses, including Northern Utah Glass, Davis County Glass, and Valley Glass. Shortly after, Gerald’s stores would all be named Valley Glass.
Valley Glass expanded dramatically under the leadership of Gerald’s son, Marc, becoming an industry leader in residential, commercial, and auto glass. Central Glass, Intermountain Jobbers, and Valley Glass continued to grow and evolve until 2021 when the Central Glass and Intermountain Jobbers locations were acquired under the Valley Glass name. In addition to bringing together all the family stores, Valley Glass acquired Utah Mobile Auto Glass to further expand auto glass services.
